A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has occurred in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands.
The islands are a seismically active zone where the earth’s crust is being subducted.

The United States Geological Survey has announced that an earthquake struck Alaska’s Aleutian Islands The earthquake took place at a depth of 10 km (just over six miles) in the Fox Islands part of the Aleutian chain.

200,000 killed in Haiti quake, says premier

More than 200,000 people were killed in the January 12 earthquake that hit Haiti, Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said yesterday.

Mr Bellerive said 300,000 people were injured in the disaster, including 4,000 amputees. Previous estimates from the Haitian government had put the toll between 150,000 and 200,000 dead.

Meanwhile, the United Nations yesterday assigned former US President Bill Clinton, now UN special envoy to Haiti, to coordinate international relief efforts in the earthquake-devastated country. Read More / Watch Video »

780,000 people dead in nearly 4,000 disasters

Center for Research on Epidemiology of Disasters says more than 780,000 people were killed in nearly 4,000 disasters.

A United Nations report finds more people died from earthquakes in the past decade than from any other disaster. Data compiled by the Center for Research on Epidemiology of Disasters says earthquakes remain a serious threat for millions of people worldwide.

Two Earthquakes hit Ireland

Two earthquakes have been recorded in Co Donegal within the past 36 hours.

They come less than three weeks after an earthquake measuring 1.6 was recorded in the northeast of the county.

The latest events on Tuesday night and yesterday morning measured 1.5 and 1.7 respectively and were felt by residents in the Termon and Milford areas, north of Letterkenny. Read More / Watch Video »

Magnitude 6.1 aftershock strikes Haiti

A strong aftershock struck Haiti on Wednesday, sending people camping out in the capital’s streets after last week’s earthquake running away from crumbled buildings in panic.

The U.S. Geological Survey said it had a magnitude of 6.1 and was centred 26 miles (42 km) west-northwest of Jacmel.

Haitian authorities conceded they had lost their battle to maintain order in Port-au-Prince after the leaders of the city’s crime gangs reclaimed their old turf since being freed when the national prison collapsed last week.

Troops arrive to help Haiti

US Black Hawk helicopters swooped down on Haiti’s wrecked presidential palace to deploy troops and supplies, as a huge relief operation to help earthquake survivors gained momentum.

The airborne troops in combat gear moved to secure Port-au-Prince’s nearby General Hospital, where staff have been overwhelmed by huge numbers of seriously injured patients.

Their dramatic deployment to help speed up logjammed aid efforts brought crowds of quake survivors camped out in the park opposite the palace rushing to its iron railings to gawk and beg for handouts of food. Read More / Watch Video »

Argentina rattled by two earthquakes

Western Argentina has been rattled by two moderate earthquakes that emphasised the region’s seismic volatility but left no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The first quake, of 4.6 magnitude, struck in the early hours just south-west of the town of San Juan.

The National Institute for Earthquake Prevention says the epicentre was at a depth of 117 kilometres, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) registered the depth at 96 kilometres. Read More / Watch Video »

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake has rattled buildings and homes in the Cayman Islands, but there are no reports of injury or damage.

“It shook my whole apartment for about 10 seconds,” said photographer Alan Markoff in the capital George Town.
